Oak Creek Canyon

Oak Creek Canyon, an awe-inspiring gorge carved along the Oak Creek Fault, lies on the edge of the Mogollon Rim of the Colorado Plateau. Its creation is a story of geological transformation, with tectonic forces and the erosion of Oak Creek revealing layers of history in the rock formations. Stretching approximately 12 miles, this canyon's depths range from 800 to 2,000 feet, offering a dramatic landscape shaped over millions of years.

The origins of Oak Creek Canyon date back around 65 million years, when tectonic activity caused a shift along the Oak Creek Fault, lifting the eastern side by about 600 feet. Over time, erosion leveled the terrain until another tectoni...

Red Mountain Trail No. 159

Area Status: Open

Located in the Coconino National Forest, about 25 miles northwest of Flagstaff, Arizona, Red Mountain is a striking volcanic cinder cone. Unlike typical symmetrical cones, Red Mountain features a unique "U" shape, with its northeast flank cut by a massive natural amphitheater. The amphitheater is adorned with fascinating erosional pillars known as "hoodoos" and studded with dark mineral crystals that have eroded from the walls. According to research from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Northern Arizona University, Red Mountain was formed by volcanic eruptions approximately 740,000 years ago.

Woods Canyon Trail No. 93

The Woods Canyon Trail begins at a well-marked trailhead near the Red Rock Visitor Center and District Ranger Station. The initial 1.25 miles follows a flat, unshaded jeep road that opens into a wide canyon, offering expansive views of mesa slopes draped in desert vegetation. As the road ends, the trail ascends gradually, crossing a typically dry streambed lined with vibrant red rock pools. After climbing out and passing through a cattle gate, you’ll reach a signed fork—take the right path to continue deeper into Woods Canyon, while the left fork leads to the Hot Loop Trail toward Horse Mesa.

As you continue on Woods Canyon Trail, you'll enter the Munds Mount...

Strawberry Crater Trail

Embark on a 1.1-mile round-trip hike through the unique volcanic landscape of Strawberry Crater. Located on the north side of this ancient cinder cone, the trail offers hikers a glimpse into a fascinating geological past.

Strawberry Crater, a volcanic cinder cone and lava flow, forms the heart of the 10,141-acre Strawberry Crater Wilderness. Though the last eruption occurred over 900 years ago, when knighthood was emerging in Europe, the volcanic features appear as though they happened much more recently. Molten rock, frozen in time, still bears scrape marks from when it forced its way through cooler surface cracks.

The landscape is dotted with petrified bubbl...

Carroll Canyon Area Trails

Discover the serenity of Sedona’s lesser-known trails—Old Post, Ridge, Carroll Canyon, and Herkenham. This interconnected network of trails meanders through the breathtaking landscapes of Sedona, mostly hidden from the developed areas, offering an intimate escape into nature. Accessible from three different trailheads, these paths invite both loop hikes and one-way adventures, especially if transportation is arranged between trailheads. With easy to moderate grades and minimal elevation change, the trails are well-marked yet offer little shade, making them a perfect retreat during cooler hours.
