Strawberry Crater Trail
Embark on a 1.1-mile round-trip hike through the unique volcanic landscape of Strawberry Crater. Located on the north side of this ancient cinder cone, the trail offers hikers a glimpse into a fascinating geological past.
Strawberry Crater, a volcanic cinder cone and lava flow, forms the heart of the 10,141-acre Strawberry Crater Wilderness. Though the last eruption occurred over 900 years ago, when knighthood was emerging in Europe, the volcanic features appear as though they happened much more recently. Molten rock, frozen in time, still bears scrape marks from when it forced its way through cooler surface cracks.
The landscape is dotted with petrified bubbles of once-boiling lava, and the sparse vegetation struggles to establish itself on this rugged, moon-like terrain. Scattered across this inhospitable environment are ancient ruins, testament to the resourcefulness of a civilization that thrived here even as the land remained volatile. You may even spot remnants of their gardens, where volcanic cinders were used as mulch to conserve moisture.
As you hike, take in the breathtaking views of the San Francisco Peaks, Sunset Crater, and the Painted Desert on the horizon.
Current Conditions: Access via FR546 was damaged by flooding in summer 2022, requiring high-clearance vehicles for safe passage.
Usage: Light
Closest Towns: Flagstaff, AZ
Directions: To reach the trailhead, take Sunset Crater/Wupatki Road (FR 545) or FR 546 and FR 779 off US 89, located 20 miles north of Flagstaff. Be mindful that accessing the area became more challenging after the 2022 Pipeline Fire and subsequent rains, causing washouts and unstable soil. High-clearance vehicles are advised, and four-wheel drive may be necessary during certain times of the year. Bikes and ATVs may also be suitable for access, but all vehicles must stop at the parking lot as motorized vehicles are not permitted in the Wilderness area.
