 Loy Canyon Trail No. 5

A Journey Through Sedona's Scenic Wilderness

Looking for a trail that offers breathtaking views, rich history, and a peaceful wilderness experience? Look no further than Loy Canyon Trail No. 5. This beautiful trail, located just 14 miles west of Sedona, takes you through a picturesque desert canyon that once served as a path for the Samuel Loy family in the 1880s, moving livestock to summer pastures. Today, it’s a serene getaway for hikers of all levels.

Trail Overview
Loy Canyon Trail starts along the fence line of the Hancock Ranch, providing hikers with stunning views from the very beginning. Towering cliffs of vermilion and buff sandstone create a dramatic backdrop, while the canyon floor is adorned with desert plants like manzanita, catclaw, cholla, and prickly pear. Along the way, you’ll see natural rock sculptures formed by seasonal rains and runoff, perfect spots for a break or a scenic picnic.

After a rain, the trail's dry streambed can transform, featuring beautiful reflecting pools or natural bathtubs—perfect for a refreshing dip. The trail also passes through a desert riparian area, home to a variety of birds and wildlife, making it a nature lover's paradise.

The Climb to Secret Mountain
As you approach the end of the canyon, the trail becomes more challenging. The final two miles are a steep climb, ascending 1,680 feet to a high saddle that leads to the top of Secret Mountain. The effort is well worth it—once at the top, you can enjoy even more spectacular views and continue your hike on the Secret Mountain Trail.
