Submarine Rock is one of Sedona's Most Family-Friendly Hikes

Submarine Rock Trail in Sedona

Looking for an iconic Sedona activity to enjoy with the entire family? Go for a hike! While some hikes are not suited for all ages and physical abilities, Submarine Rock and most of the Broken Arrow system of trails are ideal for the whole family to explore.

Submarine Rock Trail is on the east border of the Twin Buttes cluster of trails near the Chapel of the Holy Cross. There are several trails and trailheads that allow several different ways to get to the actual Submarine Rock Trail.

If you start out at the lesser-used Mystic Trailhead you will then follow the Hog Wash Trail to the Broken Arrow Trail. This will make for about a six-mile hike. If your young ones would benefit from a shorter hike we suggest starting at Broken Arrow. As you wind through the trails you will take in sandstone pillars with constantly changing views of the red rocks that make Sedona famous, which is great for keeping young ones engaged and entertained. Take a minute to check out the Devil’s Dining Room, just off of Broken Arrow. Devil’s Dining Room is a sizable sinkhole created by the collapse of a cave system below. The fifty-foot wide sinkhole is about 90 feet deep and surrounded by a large fence. It is home to a sizeable colony of bats.  As you pass through a forest of cypress, and yucca the trees will thin to give way to the first views of Submarine Rock. The rock really does look like a submarine skimming the surface of an otherworldly ocean. Some would describe it as an alien spacecraft.

Getting to the top of Submarine Rock may find first-time hikers wondering how to get there. The easiest and most obvious route is to follow the jeep trail to where the jeep tour groups gather. There are also more locations at the base of Submarine Rock around the north and east sides if you have time to go exploring it is worth the extra time to check them out. When you reach the top of Submarine Rock you will be met with breathtaking 360  panoramic views of the entire red rock area.

After a day of exploring, head back into downtown Sedona and enjoy a nice meal or a sweet treat in the ice cream shop.
